INTERMEDIATE COURSE, 2014, CLASS 8

Our eight lesson was about cars. We learnt the different parts of the car in Spanish:
Las partes del coche
Los faros – the lights
El intermitente – the indicators
El volante – the steering wheel
El embrague – the clutch
El freno – the break
El acelerador – the accelerator
El motor de arranque – the ignition
El espejo (retrovisor) – the mirror
El parabrisas – the windscreen
El limpia parabrisas – windscreen wiper
El freno de mano – handbrake
La palanca de cambios – Gear stick

We learnt two different phrases to express instructions or commands (you have to…) in Spanish. We have two options:
1)With our impersonal pronoun “se”:
   Se + a verb in the 3rd person of singular
Example: Se trabaja para ganar dinero – You have to work to earn money.
2)With “Hay que…”:
    Hay que + verb in the infinitve form
Example: Hay que trabajar para ganar dinero – You have to work to earn money.

We worked on activity number 7. In pairs we wrote those sentences with “se” or “hay que”  and we put them in the correct order. The answers would be:
Se pone la llave de contacto en el motor de arranque – You have to put the key in the ignition
Se arranca – You have to start the car
Hay que mirar el espejo retrovisor – You have to look through the mirror
Se aprieta el embrague – You have to press the clutch
Se mete la primera marcha – You have to put in the first gear
Hay que apretar el acelerador – You have to press the accelerator
Se aprieta el embrague – You have to press the clutch
Hay que meter la segunda marcha – You have to put in the second gear
Se aprieta el acelerador – You have to press the accelerator

We also worked on activity number 8. We listened to a dialogue and we pointed out the parts of the car that needed to be repaired.
Some words or phrases we did not understand:
Hace un rato tuve que parar porque salía un poco de humo – I had to stop a while ago because there was smoke coming out.
Creo que esto llevará bastante tiempo – I think this will take us a while
El freno de mano no va bien – The hand brake is not working properly
Parece que va casi suelto – It looks like it is loosened
¿Puede arreglarlo para esta tarde? – Could you fix it by this evening?
Hay que cambiar las luces, el faro de la derecha no funciona – We have to change the lights, the right bulb does not work.
¿Puede mirar los neumáticos también? – Could you have a look at the tyres as well?
Parece que el de delante pierde aire – It seems like the front one is loosing air / is flat.
¿Puede mirar el cambio de marchas? – Can you have a look at the gear stick?
A veces se atasca y la primera marcha no entra – It gets stuck sometimes and the first gear does not go in.

In the last part of our lesson we learnt different words and expressions that are used to rent cars.
Preguntas para alquilar un coche – Questions to rent a car.
¿Cuánto cuesta alquilar un coche? – How much does it cost to rent a car?
¿Cuántas puertas tiene el coche? – How many doors does the car have?
¿Cuántos tipos de coche tienes? – What type of cars do you have?
¿Cuánto tiempo puedo alquilar un coche? / ¿Para cuántos días puedo alquilar un coche? – How long can I rent a car for?
¿El coche tiene seguro? – Does the car have insurance?
Un seguro a todo riesgo – a fully comprehensive insurance

We listened to a dialogue about a woman who wanted to rent a car and we worked on activity number 11.
Some words and phrases we did not understand:
En estos momentos no tenemos ningún coche pero nos devolverán dos mañana – We do not have any cars at this momento but two will be returned tomorrow.
Se lo podemos reservar para mañana – We can reserve / book it for you for tomorrow.
¿Está incluida la gasolina? – Is the petrol included?
¿A qué hora tengo que pasar a recogerlo? – What time will I come collect it?
¿Le va bien sobre las nueve? – Does it suit you at around 9?

After listening to the dialogue, we answered the questions on act. Number 11
1.Quiere alquilar el coche durante diez días. No. (she wants the car for four days)
2.Lo quiere hoy. Sí (she needs the car today, but there are no cars available)
3.El precio incluye el seguro completo. Sí
4.El precio incluye gasolina. No.
5.Tiene que recoger el coche el próximo día a las ocho. No. (She’ll collect it at nine)
