FELIP CARBONELL AND THE GREAT LATIN AMERICAN SONGWRITERS; OCTOBER 12TH
On Friday, October 12th, Sligo Spanish Society are
pleased to present Felip Carbonell and guests, in a very special concert in
the Yeats Building, Sligo.
In this, the second in a series of one-off concerts introducing
the songwriters and singers of the Spanish-speaking world to the Sligo
public, Felip will talk about and sing the songs of the great Argentinian and
Chilean songwriters of the sixties and seventies; foremost among them, Víctor
Jara.
Felip, originally from Mallorca but a Sligo resident for almost
two decades, will communicate to us his passion for the great Latin American
songwriters of the last four decades. He will be joined on stage by Ray Coen and Ian Bordley. More info below. A special event, not to be missed.
Doors open at 7.45pm, concert begins at 8.00pm. €10 ticket price
includes a glass of wine and tapas. A big thanks to our sponsors Cosgroves
Delicatessan and Tir na Nog for helping to make the event possible.
On this occasion Felip will be accompanied by his NoCrows colleague Ray Coen on guitar and by their long-time friend and collaborator Ian Bordley on guitar, ukulele and flutes. This is not the first time this trio have got together. In 2015 they celebrated W.B. Yeats' 150th birthday in Sligo Abbey reviewing the poetry of Yeats and Antonio Machado among other poets in the English and Spanish languages.
The focus of this chapter #2 of the Cycle of Concerts of the Great Hispanic Poets & Songwriters will be on the Argentinian and Chilean singers and songwriters. Felip, Ray and Ian will perform songs mainly by Victor Jara, Atahualpa Yupanqui and Violeta Parra, also paying tribute to Mercedes Sosa, arguably one of the most important interpreters in the whole of Latin America. Felip learnt their repertoire at a very young age:
"even before I held a guitar on my lap for the first time, I was mesmerized listening to Atahualpa Yupanqui on Spanish national TV (strangely enough considering the clash of his political views with those of Franco's regime). Shortly after that (aged 9) I heard the description of the brutal death of Victor Jara in 1973, a few days after the militarily coup by General Pinochet. Both Atahualpa & Victor were amongst my first influences'. The show will conclude with Ian's very special tribute to Victor and his musical legacy."
