BEGINNERS' COURSE, 2019, CLASS 4


This week we revised the topic of family and nationalities with a sentence translation exercise.
Mi tío es de Santiago en Chile – My uncle is from Santiago in Chile.
Mis hermanas no son inglesas – My sisters are not English.
Mi tía es española – My aunt is Spanish
Mi abuelo es de Liverpool en Inglaterra – My grandad is from Liverpool in England.
My abuela no es irlandesa, ella es de Escocia – My granny is not Irish, she is from Scotland.
La familia de mi padre es de Gales – My father’s family is from Wales.
Mi madre no es irlandesa, ella es de Estados Unidos – My mother is not Irish, she is from the U.S.

We started the topic of Jobs – los trabajos
¿Qué haces? – What do you do for a living?
¿Qué hace? – What does he/she do for a living?
Soy … - I am a/an…
Es … - He / she is a/an…
We also learnt jobs:
Él es policía / Ella es policía – He is a policeman; She is a policewoman
Él es médico/ Ella es médica – He is a doctor; She is a doctor
Él es cocinero / Ella es cocinera – He is a chef; She is a chef
Él es estudiante / Ella es estudiante – He is a student; She is a student
Él está jubilado / Ella está jubilada – He is retired ; She is retired
¿Qué haces? – What do you do for a living?
Soy policía – I am a policeman
¿Qué hace tu mujer? – What does your wife do?
Es profesora – She is a teacher
¿y tu marido? – And your husband?
Es cocinero – He’s a chef
Él es artista y músico – He is an artist and a musician
Él es fontanero – He is a plumber
Ella es granjera – She is a farmer
Ella es funcionaria – She is an office worker (normally someone who works for the government)
Él es diseñador gráfico – He is a graphic designer
Es abogado/a – He/she’s a lawyer
Es carpintero – He’s a carpenter
Es ingeniero/a – He/she is an engineer

We also worked on a dialogue and we translated the words and sentences we did not understand.
Azafata – Air hostess
Estudian periodismo los dos – They both study journalism
Abogado – laywer
Enfermera – Nurse
¿A qué te dedicas? – Another way to say “What do you do?”
¿A qué se dedica? – What does he/she do?
¿A qué se dedican? – What do they do?

Other words that we learnt:
Autónomo – self-employed
Estar desempleado – to be unemployed
Trabajar a tiempo parcial – To work part-time
Trabajar a tiempo complete – To work full-time
