PRE-INTERMEDIATE COURSE, NEW YEAR 2016, CLASS 1

 We began by doing an exercise – called “dos verdades, una mentira,” – where we all wrote three things about ourselves, one false and two true, and the others had to guess which was the lie.
Verdad – truth
Mentira – a lie
Me encantan los albaricoques (apricots)
He vivido en Islandia
En 1996 conocí la Presidenta de Irlanda.

We then went on to talk about jobs and what people do in their jobs

Un bombero apaga los fuegos – a fireman puts out fires
Apagar – to put out, turn off
Encender – to light, to turn on
Un policía detiene a los criminales – a policeman arrests criminals
Detener - to arrest
Un conductor lleva a la genta a su destino
Llevar – to take, carry
Un peluquero estila y corta el pelo
Estilar – to style
Un cartero reparte el correo
Repartir – to deliver
Una enfermera saca sangre y cuida a los pacientes
Sacar – to take out
Cuidar – to take care of
Un camarero atiende a los clientes
Atender – to serve
Un profesor enseña a los alumnos
Enseñar – to teach/show

We also mentioned the personal “a” in Spanish. This is used after a verb if the object is a person….
Una enfermera cuida a los pacientes
Un conductor lleva a la gente….
But – un cartero reparte el correo

We then did an exercise where we each chose an occupation and the others had to ask questions to guess what it was…
¿Trabaja en el aire libre? – Does he/she work in the open air?
¿Trabaja con el público?
¿Lleva uniforme?

Un cura/ un sacerdote – a priest
