We began by revising the words connected with the family….
El padre - the father
La madre - the mother
Los padres - parents
El hijo - the son
La hija - the daughter
Los hijos - the children
Casado/a - married
El marido - the husband
El hermano - the brother
la hermana - the sister
El abuelo - the grandfather
La abuela - the grandmother
Los abuelos - the grandparents

¿Tienes.......? - Do you have......?
¿Tienes hijos? - Do you have children?
Tengo ..... - I have.....
Tengo un hijo y una hija - I have one son and one daughter
¿Tienes hermanos? - Do you have brothers and sisters?
Tengo un hermano y una hermana - I have one brother and one sister

We then moved on to talking about jobs...
Los trabajos - jobs
¿Qué haces? - What do you do?
¿Qué hace? - What does he/she do?
Es bombero - He is a fireman.
Es médico - He is a doctor
Es médica - She is a doctor
Es policía - He/she is a policeman
Es peluquero - He is a hairdresser
Es peluquera - She is a hairdresser
Es cocinero - He is a chef/cook
Es cocinera - She is a chef/cook
Es enfermera - She is a nurse
Es enfermero - he is a nurse
Es estudiante - He/she is a student
Está jubilado - he is retired
Está jubilada - she is retired

We then looked at the names of countries in Spanish...
Los países - The countries
Irlanda - Ireland
España - Spain
Inglaterra - England
Francia - France
Los Estados Unidos - The United States
Alemania - Germany
Escocia - Scotland

Then we learned the words for nationalities...
Irlandés/ irlandesa - Irish
Español/ española - Spanish
Inglés/ inglesa - English
Francés /francesa - French
Norteamericano/norteamericana - American
Alemán/alemana - German
Escocés/ escocesa - Scottish

We also mentioned that in Spanish it is possible to leave out the pronouns - Yo, Tú, Él, Ella - as long as we keep the verb....
Soy irlandés = Yo soy irlandés
Él es español = Es español

We also talked about the nationalities of various famous people...it's important to note that the adjective changes according to gender....
Rafa Nadal es español
Penelope Cruz es española

Finally we looked at talking about languages
¿Hablas español? – do you speak Spanish?
Hablo un poco – I speak a little.
