BEGINNERS COURSE, SUMMER 2015, CLASS 5

We began by revising the time and days of the week from last week.

We then went on to learn the words for various foods and drink
La comida - food
El pollo - chicken
La carne - meat
La carne de vaca - beef
La carne de cerdo - pork
El queso - cheese
El vino tinto - red wine
El vino blanco - white wine
La cerveza - beer
Las patatas - potatoes
Las patatas fritas - chips
Las naranjas - oranges
Los huevos - eggs
La pasta - pasta
El arroz - rice
La leche - milk
Los mariscos - shellfish
La mantequilla - butter
La ensalada - salad
El jamón - ham
El pescado - fish
El pan - bread
La tortilla - spanish omelette

We then looked at likes and dislikes
¿Te gusta.....? - Do you like...?
¿te gusta el pollo? - Do you like chicken?
Sí, me gusta - yes, I like it.
No, no me gusta - No, I don't like it.
Me gusta mucho - I like it a lot
Me encanta el vino – I love wine
Me gustan los huevos – I like eggs (plural)
¿Te gustan los huevos?  (for plural things)

We then looked at the definite article - "The" in English
El queso – cheese (masc singular)
Los mariscos – shellfish (masc plural)
La leche – milk (fem singular)
Las patatas fritas  - chips (fem plural)

We then looked at language to use in a restaurant......
Un menú, por favor - a menu please
Paella - rice with shellfish
Sopa del día - soup of the day
Bistec - steak
Pollo asado - roast chicken
La merluza - hake
Tortilla de patatas - Spanish omelette
Helado - ice cream
Torta de chocolate - chocolate cake

Clientes - customers
Camarero - waiter
¡Oiga, perdone! - excuse me (to attract attention)
¿Podemos pedir? - can we order?
¿Qué van a tomar? - what are you going to have?
De primero - for starter
De segundo - for main course
Quiero - I want...
Quisiera - I would like...
¿Para beber? - What do you want to drink?
Una caña - a glass of draught beer
Una copa de vino - a glass of wine
Una media botella de vino - a half bottle of wine
Una botella de agua con gas - a bottle of sparkling water
Una botella de agua sin gas - a bottle of still water
Un vaso de leche - a glass of milk
Postre - dessert
Sólo un café - just a coffee
¿algo más? - Anything else?
Tráiganos - bring us...
Un poco más de vino - a little more wine
La cuenta por favor - the bill please.
