We began by revising some tenses in Spanish
The Present tense
... is used for regular, routine actions

AR verbs .... Hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan
ER verbs..... como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen
IR verbs..... vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven

We then looked at some irregular verbs and their first persons in the present

Poner - to put - Pongo

Saber - to know - sé

Conocer - to know a person - conozco

Dormir - to sleep - duermo

Pensar - to think - pienso

Venir - to come - vengo

Encontrar - to find - encuentro

Ver - to see - veo

Poder - to be able - puedo

Decir - to say - digo

We then mentioned the two ways of talking about the future in Spanish.

1. We need three elements to talk about the future.....

(i) The verb Ir (voy, vas, va, vamos vais, van)
(ii) a
(iii) the infinitive

This is usually used for plans and intentions....

I am going to study this weekend....
- voy a estudiar este fin de semana

We are going to go out on Saturday.. -
Vamos a salir el sábado

2. For the future tense in Spanish, we need to take the infinitive of a verb, and add the endings...

é, ás, á, emos , éis, án.

There are also some irregular verbs.... the first person.......
Tener - Tendré,  Salir - saldré
Poner - pondré,   Hacer - haré
Decir - diré,    Poder - podré

This tense is usually used for talking more definitely about the future...

Next year I will study in the university.
- El año que viene estudiaré en la universidad

We then examined the continuous - el contínuo in Spanish..
This tense translates the English "I am studying", "we are eating dinner", "they are swimming". It is used for things that are happening right now.

For this we need two elements....
(i) Present tense of the verb Estar (estoy, estás, está....etc)
(ii) the gerund of the verb. To get the gerund we take off the ending from the infinitive and ....
- for -AR verbs add  "-ando"
- for -IR/-ER verbs add "-iendo"

We are studying - Estamos estudiando
They are swimming - Están nadando
He is having dinner - Está cenando

We did some practice, translating sentences from English...

- I am washing my hair. - Estoy lavándome el pelo.
- Maria plays football twice a week. - María juega al fútbol dos veces a la semana.
- I'll see you tomorrow.- Te veré mañana.
- They get up at half past seven every day. - Se levantan a las siete y media todos los días.

We then learned vocabulary connected to Technology

La Red - the internet (la red also means "the net")
El ordenador portátil - the laptop
La página web/El sitio web - the web site
El reproductor DVD (deh-oobeh-deh) - A DVD player
Las redes sociales - social media (facebook, twitter, etc)
Bajar - to download
El aparato - the apparatus, device, piece of equipment
Los teléfonos móviles - mobiles
Los teléfonos fijos - landlines (fixed)
El buzón de voz - voicemail.
Una aplicación - an app
mandar/enviar un mensaje - to send a text
Buscar - to search
una búsqueda - a search
un buscador - a search engine
bandeja de entrada - Inbox

We then looked at a question from the 2003 Leaving Cert - Los colgados de los móviles - Mobile phone addicts

We concentrated on the questions where you have to find expressions in the text that mean the same as the expressions given in the question.
eg. "(b) Para mucha gente se ha transformado en una exigencia fundamental.
(paragraph 2)"
We mentioned here that this question contains a verb in the Perfect "se ha transformado", and so the answer in the text also should be in the Perfect. In paragraph 2 there is only one example of the Perfect "se ha convertido para muchos en una necesidad primaria", so this has to be the answer.

For homework, we have to do numbers 2 and 3, finding the expressions in the text.

We then looked at Sinónimos - synonyms, ie. words in Spanish that have the same meaning, eg. La gente/las personas both mean "people". Synonyms are important when it comes to doing the question in the reading, where you have to find similar expressions in the text. We completed a table of synonyms...

Some important sinónimos....
Mandar/enviar - to send
El desempleo/el paro - unemployment
Demostrar/enseñar - to show
Acordarse/recordar - to remember

Actualmente/hoy en día - nowadays, currently
