LEAVING CERT GRAMMAR REVISION, CLASS 2

We began the class by revising subject pronouns in Spanish

Yo (I)

Tú (you)

Él/ella/usted (he/she/you (formal))

Nosotros (we)

Vosotros (you plural)

Ellos/ ustedes (They/ you plural (formal))

Then we looked at regular verbs in the Present tense

First person - Yo
Always ends in "o"
Hablo, como, vivo, espero

Second person - Tú
Always ends in "s"
Hablas, comes, vives, esperas

Third person - él/ella/usted
Always ends in "a" or "e"
Habla, come, vive, espera

First person Plural - Nosotros
Always ends in "mos"
Hablamos, comemos, vivimos, esperamos

Second person Plural - Vosotros
Always ends in "is"
Habláis, coméis, vivís, esperáis

Third person plural - Ellos/ustedes
Always ends in "n" ("an" or "en")
Hablan, comen, viven, esperan

We moved on to some irregular verbs in the Presente.
The following are irregular in the first person only....

Salir - salgo
Poner - pongo
Saber - sé
Conocer - conozco
Hacer - hago
Dar - doy

The following are more irregular

Tener - tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos....
Venir - vengo, vienes, viene, venimos, venís, vienen
Decir - digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen
Ir - voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van
Oír - oigo, oyes, oye, oímos, oís, oyen.


We then moved on to radical changing verbs...
These are verbs where the vowel changes....

O/U to UE
Encontrar - encuentro, encuentras, encuentra, encontramos, encontráis, encuentran
Dormir - duermo, etc......

E to IE
Perder - Pierdo, pierdes, pierde, perdemos, perdéis, pierden
Querer - quiero, quieres........

E to I
Pedir - pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden

Note: These radical changing verbs are REGULAR in the Nosotros and Vosotros forms.

We came across many new verbs in this class, including....

Encontrar - to find

Venir - to come

Entender - to understand

Dar - to give

Decir - to say

Llevar - to take (or spend time)

Llegar - to arrive

Oír - to hear

Saber - to know information

Conocer - to know a person
Also, "P" verbs....

Poder - to be able

Pedir - to ask for

Poner - to put

Perder - to lose

Pensar - to think
