LEAVING CERT GRAMMAR REVISION, AUTUMN 2014, CLASS 4

We began by revising Question words in Spanish....

¿Qué? - what
¿Quién? - Who
¿Cuándo...? - When
¿Dónde....? - Where
¿Cuántos...? - how many
¿Cómo...? - How....

We then revised how to talk about the Future in Spanish
1). Ir + a + Infinitive

 (i) the verb Ir
voy, vas, va, vamos, vais , van

(ii) the word "a"

(iii) the infinitive of the verb..... comer, ir, ser, estar, hacer, etc....

2). The Future tense

The second way of talking about the future is by adding endings to the infinitive...
The endings are ..... é, ás, á, emos, éis, án.

Comeré - I will eat

Comerás - you will eat

Comerá - he/she will eat
Comeremos - we will eat

Comeréis - you (plural) will eat

Comerán - they will eat

We also mentioned some irregular verbs...
Tener - Tendré, tendrás......
Salir - Saldré, saldrás.....
Poner - pondré, pondrás.....

We did some practice on the future. The answers to the exercises we didn't complete in class are here...

We also learned the possessive adjectives in Spanish...
Mi amigo/ mis amigos


Tu amigo/ tus amigos


Su amigo/ sus amigos
Nuestro amigo/nuestra amiga
Nuestros amigos/ nuestras amigas

Vuestro amigo/ vuestra amiga
Vuestros amigos/vuestras amigas

Su amigo/sus amigos

We then went on to talk about the differences between Ser and Estar

Ser
Soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son

- Descriptions of people and things
Mi hermano es alto y gordo.

- Nationalities
Soy irlandesa

- Time
Son las tres.

- Jobs
Mi padre es ingeniero.

Estar
Estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están

- Emotions and feelings
Estoy contento/a.

- Location. Where someone or something is.
París está en Francia.

- Temporary states - clean, dirty, tidy,
Mi habitación está desordenada.

We learned some vocabulary...

Pasarlo bien - to have a good time
Lo pasaré bien - I will have a good time
sucio - dirty
limpio - clean
des/ordenado - untidy/tidy
viejo - old
joven - young
cansado - tired
triste - sad
bombero - fireman
enfermera - nurse
pasar - to happen
ocurrir - to happen
Egipto - Egypt


We then talked about a tense - the Continuous - that we form using Estar.
Estoy trabajando - I am working
Estamos estudiando - We are studying
Juan está comiendo - Juan is eating

We need two elements to form this tense
1). Estar

2). The gerund - this is the "...ing" form in English, and in Spanish it ends in "...ando" or "...iendo" - "ando" for AR verbs, "iendo" for IR and ER verbs.
Trabajar - to work
trabajando - working
vivir - to live
viviendo - living...
