INTERMEDIATE COURSE, SPRING 2014, CLASS 5

In this lesson, we talked about food and our habits. Firstly, we reviewed some words related to foods and we included them in different categories.

Fruta – Fruit
Plátano – banana
Fresa – strawberry
Melón – melon
Naranja – orange
Pera – pear
Pescado – fish
Trucha – trout
Pulpo – octopus
Lubina – seabass
Dorada – bream
Merluza – hake
Verdura – vegetables
Alcachofa – artichoke
Espinaca – spinach
Guisantes – peas
Coliflor – cauliflower
Legumbres – legumes
Judía – vean
Haba – broad vean
Garbanzos – chick peas
Soja – soy
Lentejas – lentils
Carne – meat
Chuleta  - steak
Solomillo – sirloin

Hamburguesa – burguer
In the second activity, the students were given some brochures from different supermarkets. In pairs, they decided which foods they wanted to buy. The budget available was €15.
Some words we did not understand:
Frambuesa – raspberry
Mora – blueberry
Postre – dessert
Ensalada – salad
Comida sana – healthy food

In the third activity, we discussed some questions in pairs and then we shared our answers together.
¿Realizas las cinco comidas al día recomendadas? – Do you eat the five recommended meals per day?
¿Comes muchos dulces? – Do you eat many sweets?
¿Empleas el tiempo necesario para comer? – Do you take your time to eat?
¿Qué prefieres: una ensalada o una suculenta hamburguesa de McDonalds? – What do you prefer: a salad or a nice burguer from McDonalds?
¿Cuántas veces a la semana comes pizza, patatas fritas, hamburguesas, comida precocinada…? – How many times a day do you eat pizza, chips, burguers, ready meals…?

Some new vocabulary:
Hábitos alimenticios – food habits
Cadena alimenticia – Food chain
Vegetariano, vegetariana – vegetarian
Vegano, vegana – vegan
Dieta equilibrada – balanced diet

To wrap up our lesson, we divided the group in pairs to do a debate. One group defended the advantages of traditional food and the other group defended the advantages of fast food.
Some of the ideas we came up were:
La comida tradicional es más sana – Traditional food is healthier
La comida rápida es mejor porque no tienes que cocinar ni tienes que lavar platos – Fast food is better because you don´t have to cook or wash the dishes.
La comida tradicional es más barata – traditional food is cheaper
La comida rápida la reparten a tu casa – Fast food is delivered to your house.
