BEGINNERS COURSE, SPRING 2014, CLASS 1

We began the class looking at pronunciation in Spanish. some of the important sounds are as follows...
V.................. This is always pronounced like a soft 'b'....................Vamos - we go, (bamos)  voy - I go
Ci..................This is pronounced in Spain like a 'th', in Latin America like an 's'..............cien - 100, cinco - 5.
Z...........similar to the 'C'......in Spain pronounced like a 'th' - Zaragoza.....In Latin America pronounced as an 'S' sound - Zaragoza.
H.................. Is always silent............................Hermano - brother (ermano)
R...................is rolled, at the start of words.............Real Madrid
rr.................is rolled in the middle of words ............ borracho
J, G..............this is a guttural sound, like the 'ch' in 'loch'.....................Mujer, Gente
ll.................this is pronounced like a 'y' sound.............me llamo (me yamo)
ñ..............this is pronounced like 'ni' in 'onion'..............niño....España....

We then moved on to basic hellos and good byes.
Hola - hello
Adiós - goodbye
Buenos días - good morning
Buenas tardes - good afternoon/ good evening
Hasta luego - see you later
¿Qué tal? - how are you?
Bien - fine

¿Cómo estás? - how are you?
Estoy fenomenal - I'm fantastic (if you are a man))
Estoy bien - I'm fine
Estoy mal - I'm bad
Estoy más o menos - I'm ok, not bad,
Estoy fatal - I'm terrible

Then we looked at asking for and giving personal information
¿Cómo te llamas? - What's your name?
Me llamo...... - My name is....
Encantado - pleased to meet you (if you are a man)
Encantada - pleased to meet you (if you are a woman)

¿De dónde eres? - Where are you from?
Soy de Irlanda - I'm from Ireland
Soy de Irlanda también - I'm from Ireland also

We then learned the numbers from one to ten
1. Uno                  2. Dos                        3. Tres                4. Cuatro                5. Cinco
6. Seis                 7. Siete                       8. Ocho               9. Nueve                10. Diez
